Bi-Metallic (Al-Cu) Lugs
Manufacturer & Supplier in India

Bi-metallic (Al-Cu) lugs are used where an aluminium cable must be terminated onto a copper bus bar or copper terminal. The lug has an aluminium barrel (to accept the aluminium cable) friction-welded to a copper palm (for connection to the copper terminal). This friction-welded joint eliminates galvanic corrosion at the aluminium-copper interface — a critical requirement in outdoor substations, switchgear panels and transformer terminations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical questions about Bi-Metallic (Al-Cu) Lugs

Why are bi-metallic lugs used instead of separate aluminium and copper lugs?
When aluminium cable is terminated directly on a copper bus bar or terminal, galvanic corrosion occurs at the junction due to the electrochemical potential difference between the two metals. Bi-metallic lugs eliminate this by providing a friction-welded aluminium-to-copper joint — the aluminium barrel crimps onto the cable and the copper palm bolts onto the copper terminal, with no exposed aluminium-copper interface subject to corrosion.
What cable sizes are bi-metallic tubular lugs available in?
Bi-metallic tubular lugs are available for aluminium cable sizes from 16 sq mm to 630 sq mm. The copper palm is drilled for standard bolt sizes (M8, M10, M12, M16). Custom drilling or double-hole palms are available on request for specific switchgear terminal configurations.
Do bi-metallic lugs require special crimping tools?
Yes. The aluminium barrel of bi-metallic lugs should be crimped using aluminium lug die sets, applying slightly higher compression than copper lug crimping. This ensures proper compaction of the softer aluminium conductor within the barrel. The copper palm should not be deformed during crimping — standard hydraulic tools with correct die selection handle this correctly.
